Week 25 – (Tongue and) groove is in the heart!
What sold us on the Palomino plan http://www.houseplans.com/plan/2587-square-feet-3-bedrooms-2-bathroom-modern-house-plan-2-garage-32953 by Robert Nebolon, aside from the mid-century look, were the vaulted tongue and groove ceilings! Our previous McMansion had two story ceilings in the family room, which was a little over the top. Trying to change a lightbulb was an EVENT! The ceilings on the main floor start at 8′ 1″ and gradually go up. It’s one thing to have vaulted ceilings with drywall. Add some tongue and groove paneling to them and the ceiling becomes a focal point of the whole house. Warm and inviting, with lots of character.
As mentioned in previous posts we decided on an unadvertised product from Duragroove that is sort of a white washed prefinished knotty pine. When the product arrived it surpassed our expectations. Really beautiful stuff. There is going to be some challenges trimming it out since, unlike real Eichler houses, the paneling runs parallel with the structural beams of the house. When the tongue and groove is spanning between two beams, at least ONE of them is going to receive a rip.
Along with the paneling going up the master bath floor got tiled, the hallway bath got a Ditra treatment, and the garage got stuffed with interior doors, exterior doors, windows, closet sliders, and LOTs of tile.
Liam’s room is one of the first to receive the full T&G treatment!
Hello trellis beam. You don’t look so well. I got news for the trim guys…this one is getting replaced

One of the areas where we are going to have to figure out the trim. I found some cool 3/4″ square stain grade pine trim pieces at Lowes that might fit the bill
The beautiful T&G in the guest bedroom

T&G almost looks pink sometimes but it goes GREAT with the “Utterly beige” selected for the walls

Lot’s of T&G left to install…
More paneling has made it’s way onto the ceiling in the family room. Quite the intricate scaffolding system the trim guys have created
A ton of cuts on Saturday to prep for Monday morning install
Gotta lock your stuff up around here, as we’ve found out the hard way. I can appreciate the engineering that goes into creating scaffolding from scrap wood pieces and ladders. I just wish they wouldn’t nail/screw into our new, gorgeous Douglas Fir beams. They will get covered by 1x6s eventually, but not on that end! <sigh>
It’s hard to see but there is a string that goes from the peak of the eave all the way to the other end of the house so tongue and groove can get installed perfectly straight at the ridge
Ridge paneling is a work in progress. Gotta get this part right!
Our Eichler siding has become quite the wood shaving collector. Useful stuff! 😉
Lots of ripping going on…..

Ditra gets installed in the hallway bath
Tile gets installed in laundry room. Lighting not so good today. Quite the poo-poo weather weekend again…
So this is our biggest issue I’m dealing with right now. I’m just not feeling the ultra white beams with the vintage white paneling. Considering the financial hole we are in we might just leave as-is and revisit in five years when its time to stain again

More Versalok ready to go on the 140′ retaining wall

Zo-e shield coating should help with energy bills and keep our cork floors from fading. That crazy looking thing on the right is the grinder pump. I nice $2,300 bill we were not expecting!
The 3×3 tile “3rds” from a local wholesaler doesn’t look like much now but we think it’s going to really POP in Liam’s hallway bath
The $12 a square foot tile for the kitchen backsplash. It comes in single color sheets that will have to be broken apart to assemble a multi-colored pattern
