Week 5 – Idle decisions

Week 5 brought more cold weather which meant no concrete pours. As much as I loathe an idle week there are still a TON of decisions to be made so we got to work on a few.

Color siding choices

Robert Nebolon, the architect, has put lots of thought into the colors of the Artisan Hardie Plank that we are putting on the house. Since we opted not to use the Eichler vertical siding that was originally spec’d for the plan, Robert had a James Hardie representative bring him samples of the Artisan product to pick the perfect colors. The Artisan product is a thicker cement board that can be mitered at the edges. We would have loved the look of the vertical siding but do not want a wood product.

Our first house was cedar and we joked that everything wanted to “eat her”. The house was on a wooded lot similar our new one. The woodpeckers would create holes in the cedar siding. Then hungry baby birds or the squirrels would move into the holes left by the woodpeckers. Those animals are not pleasant to share a house with. Especially at 6am on the weekends when you are trying to sleep in.

It is important to pick colors that will blend in with the the landscape. The home should blend in with it’s surroundings to keep with this style of architecture. Though I think the front door should pop. I love teal and am considering going with a teal front door similar to these:

To get a sense of how the color is going to look on the plan I opened up photoshop and added the color sourced from James Hardie’s web site.

Here we have the Tuscan Gold on the left and Chestnut Brown on the garage:

I started playing around with the color with Chestnut Brown on the garage and Monterey Taupe on the left. Not crazy about it. It is best to trust the architect on the color choice in any case.

Let me know in the comments what you think about the front door colors.

We decided to order a 1/8″ scale model with topo from Robert Nebolon architects. We figured it would be great to look at while we are waiting. Here’s what the laser-cut topo is going to look like:
