Week 22 – Trellis Time

Week 22 saw the drywall getting taped, mudded, sanded, and mudded again.  During that time the trim guys got to work on the Trellis.  Over the past few weeks we looked at various materials and the cost associated with using them.  We wanted to use cedar but 3x10s in cedar priced out to over $4500!  Our contractor suggested pine for cost savings and recommended that we put them in the house and let them dry out for a couple of weeks so they don’t twist and turn too much, then we would put a couple of coats of Cabot white stain on them to make them last.

We made a couple of changes to the plan regarding the trellis installation.  It originally had the 3×10 laying on top of the beam coming out of the house, but since the beam was mounted under the 1×4 it made the angle not line up with the roof line.  To fix, the trim guys crafted notches into the 3x10s so they would fit snug over the beam with flashing attached.  To make it look good the trim guys only cut about an inch out so the bottom of the notch would come to the bottom edge of the flashing, but I’m pretty sure they are going to have to take them down (about 150 pounds a piece!) and take out another inch so the fascia that mounts directly to the last trellis beam will match perfectly to the fascia already installed.

The pine ends and notch area were pre-stained before installing.  They will be completely stained when they can have a few days to dry out.  Another monsoon today!

Drywall work will continue next week along with the rest of the trellis work.  Kitchen is ordered and was picked up over the weekend.  Doors have also been ordered.  I’m working on a door blog and will post it shortly.  What a challenge!
